Performed only by a veterinary surgeon, acupuncture is very safe and used to treat cats, dogs & rabbits at Bourne Veterinary Practice
We use acupuncture in our clinic primarily to alleviate chronic pain, for example, in the management of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal pain.
It is also useful in the management of long standing wounds and some disorders of the nervous system. Acupuncture can be used alongside pain relief medication and is particularly useful if your pet is intolerant of these medications, or if additional pain relief is felt to be necessary as acupuncture targets pain from a different angle.
Acupuncture is very safe when practiced by someone with appropriate training and knowledge of anatomy. In the UK acupuncture may only be performed by a veterinary surgeon. Most pets tolerate the procedure well but please speak to us if this is a concern.
It is recommended to have several sessions over a few weeks initially to assess response. It is worth remembering that a positive response may not be seen straight away.
